The ESDC Machine Safety Orientation (MSO) class is offered to student, staff, and faculty within the College of Engineering. The class, offered once per quarter, consists of 6 three-hour long sessions where staff demonstrate the safe and proper usage of the mill, lathe, and drill press machines. Students are required to replicate the demonstrated processes onto 3 projects, one for each machine. Successful completion of this course will grant the student access to use the Marvel saw, mill, lathe, drill presses, and sanding/deburring machines.

The course offers certification only for the machines demonstrated during the class. Additional training is required to access other machines/equipment also available in the shop.

Topic Outline

  • Session 1: Safety, using and reading micrometers, using and reading scales, identifying bolts
  • Session 2: Using the Drop Saw, deburring cut parts, and using the drill press
  • Session 3: Introduction to the Lathe, turning and facing on the Lathe
  • Session 4: Introduction to the Mill, milling to length, step milling and side milling
  • Session 5: Drilling, tapping, and parting on the lathe
  • Session 6: Drilling, tapping, and edge finding on the mill

The in-class sessions are 3 hours long and students will use open lab time to complete their qualification projects. Lab hours can be found on the calendar at https://design.engineering.ucdavis.edu/calendar.

Cost for graduate students, post-docs, or staff involved in a research group: The College of Engineering’s Dean’s Office recharges research groups for participation in the MSO class.
