Frequently Asked Questions

  • How were rates determined?
  • Our rates reflect operational costs, equipment maintenance, staffing and compliance. They were developed following benchmarking with comparable facilities and approved by the UC Davis Office for Budget and Institutional Analysis.
  • How are rates applied to students and student orgs/teams?
  • Students will continue to use the shop, receive training and consultation, and reserve Classroom 1526 and huddle rooms at no charge.

University Sponsored Registered Student Organizations will continue to use the shop, receive training and consultation, and reserve Classroom 1526, the plaza and huddle rooms at no charge. If the USRSO cannot manufacture a part on their own, they can request the ESDC manufacture it at a fee-for-service rate.

  • Will rates apply to course-based usage?
  • The updated rates do not impact course-based usage. Several “introduction to manufacturing” courses are supported by the ESDC, and this will not change. Faculty are encouraged to consult with ESDC staff regarding anticipated course needs.
  • Are there hardship exceptions?
  • There is no formal exception process at this time. ESDC staff are available to discuss specific circumstances and anticipated usage.
  • Where does the revenue go?
  • Revenue supports the operation, maintenance and sustainability of the ESDC. Funds will be reinvested into equipment maintenance and replacement, staffing, facility operations and safety compliance.
